UND set for two exhibitions

UND plays two exhibition matches this weekend in a final tune-up before beginning the 2014 season. UND travels to Minneapolis today to scrimmage the Golden Gophers and returns home to host Viterbo on Monday.

Friday’s exhibition against the Gophers will begin at 7 p.m. at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

Monday’s scrimmage against the V-Hawks will start at 11 a.m. at Bronson Field.

The regular season begins Aug. 22 as UND takes on North Dakota State at 7 p.m. in Fargo.

Head coach Matt Kellogg enters his second year at the helm of the UND soccer program. Kellogg returns 10 letterwinners and has added 11 freshmen to the squad for 2014.


Comets picked fourth in NSAA

MADISON, S.D. — Valley City State is the preseason pick to win the 2014 North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Football Conference. The preseason coaches’ poll was announced Thursday. It was the second straight season the Vikings have been tabbed as the league favorite.

VCSU earned 43 points and three first-place votes. The University of Jamestown was second with 37 points.  Valley City State and Jamestown were the initial NSAA football co-champions last season with 3-1 records.

Dickinson State, a newcomer to the NSAA, collected two first-place votes and recorded 36 points to finish third.

Mayville State was fourth with 26 points, while Presentation was fifth with 24 points.  Dakota State (S.D.) was picked sixth with 22 points.

Waldorf (Iowa), a new member to the NSAA football-only conference, received nine points to finish seventh.

To earn an automatic bid to the NAIA playoffs, a team needs to be in the Top 20 in the national poll and win the conference title.

The conference season starts Aug. 23 when Waldorf plays at Mayville State.


Mayville State picked second

MADISON, S.D. — For the second straight season, the University of Jamestown was picked as the favorite to win the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) title.

The Jimmies earned four first-place votes and tallied 34 points.

Mayville State, which finished second with 29 points, received two first-place votes.  Dickinson State, a newcomer to the NSAA this season, was picked third with 21 points.

Dakota State (S.D.) was picked fourth with 19 points, while Valley City State was fifth with 15 points.  Presentation (S.D.) was sixth with 12 points.

Jamestown won the inaugural NSAA conference regular-season and conference tournament titles last season with an overall record of 26-8 and an 8-0 NSAA record.

The 2014 NSAA season will consist of 10 conference matches with six teams competing for the conference title.  The NSAA conference season starts Sept. 18 when Dakota State hosts Presentation.
