Spitzer wins GF all-city title

Danika Spitzer captured the Grand Forks All-City women’s golf tournament that concluded Tuesday at the Grand Forks Country Club.

The first day of the two-day event was held at Valley Golf Course in East Grand Forks.

Spitzer finished with a two-day total of 169.

Other flight winners were: Brandi Kuenzel, second; and Debbie McLennan, third.

UMC golfer wins Birchmont

BEMIDJI — Minnesota-Crookston golfer Katie Sheetz won the women’s division of the 90th annual Birchmont golf tournament played at the Bemidji Town and Country Club recently. She won the tournament for the second straight season.

Sheetz edged Emily Israelson of Staples, Minn., going 1-up in the 21 holes of the championship match.

Sheetz will be a junior this season at UMC.

Swimming, Diving

UND releases schedule

Second-year UND coach Chris Maiello announced his men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams’ 2014-15 schedule Tuesday, a slate that features eight home dates at Hyslop Pool.

“We are really looking forward to our competition schedule this year,” Maiello said. “It’s a challenging schedule that will be sure to push us in hopes to get great results for our athletes. Although a challenging schedule, we are looking forward to competition at a higher level on a weekly basis this season.”

The season gets underway Sept. 26 when UND will host a Green vs. White exhibition followed by an Alumni Meet on the 27th. The regular season opens at home against St. Cloud State on Oct. 3, the first of five different home events. Following a trip to Brookings, S.D., to battle the Jackrabbits, UND will host South Dakota, Air Force (men) and Northern Colorado (women) for two-day duals Oct. 17-18.

A dual at Minnesota comes Oct. 24th and is followed by a swing through Ames, Iowa (Oct. 31) and Lawrence, Kan. (Nov. 1).

The women’s team returns to Hyslop for a home dual with Minnesota State, Moorhead on Nov. 7, the final dual of the first half of the season. The Border Battle Invite at Wisconsin-Stevens Point features teams from Michigan, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Illinois, Minnesota and UND for a two-day event Nov. 14-15.

This season’s annual training trip will be Dec. 31 to Jan. 8 in Phoenix, Ariz. which will lead into meets with Northern Colorado and host Grand Canyon on Jan. 9-10.

UND returns the trip to South Dakota Jan. 24 and brings SDSU to Grand Forks a week later. UND heads back to the Twin Cities on Feb. 6-7 for the Minnesota Challenge, the final tune-up before the Western Athletic Conference Championships Feb. 25-28 in San Antonio, Texas.

Grand Forks will be the site of a USA Swimming Olympic Trails meet on Mar. 6.

Women’s soccer

UMC lands Central player

CROOKSTON — Nikki Dogan, a former Grand Forks Central standout, has signed to play at Minnesota-Crookston this season.

 “She is an athletic center mid who is only going to get better when she gets acclimated to the NSIC,” said UMC coach Joe Alianiello. “I am looking forward to having her on the team because her attitude and work rate are fantastic.”

Dogan was named the Central’s MVP twice during her career and also was an all-Eastern Dakota Conference selection.

 UMC opens the season Sept. 6 at home against Finlandia University.


  •  Academics: Northland Community and Technical College’s Tara Evje was recognized by the NJCAA for academic honors for the 2013-2014 sports season. The NJCAA Student Athlete awards were previously recognized by the NJCAA as Academic All American honors. Evje, of Fosston, Minn., received the Superior Academic Achievement award, which are for student athletes who have completed three full-time semesters with a GPA between (3.80-3.99). She was a member of the Pioneer volleyball and softball teams.
  •  Athletics: Minnesota-Crookston has announced the hiring of Kathleen Brown as assistant athletic director/senior women’s administrator (SWA) and director of marketing and promotions. Brown spent the last six years at Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, Va., where she was most recently the athletic director for the past year.
