LOCAL CLIPBOARD: UND's Johnson narrowly misses NCAA qualifying

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — University of North Dakota senior Shawn Johnson finished in 19th place in the discus at the NCAA West Regional — just three spots shy of the 16-person field that qualifies for the NCAA Championship.

Johnson, who entered the meet ranked 33rd, had a best throw of 54.21 meters (177-10). Paul Thomas of Wyoming finished in the 16th spot with a throw of 54.85 meters (179-11).

Johnson, a native of Eveleth, Minn., was the top Big Sky finisher, beating Big Sky champion Micael Lunjberg of Northern Arizona.

Grafton finishes seventh

MINOT — Grafton defeated Watford City 14-4 here Saturday to finish seventh at the North Dakota Class B state high school fastpitch softball tournament.

Winning pitcher Megan Osowski went 3-for-5 and scored four runs the lead the Spoilers, who also received two doubles and two runs scored by Karly Kennelly.

The Spoilers finished with 15 hits to Watford City’s six, and only committed three errors to the Wolves’ six.
