UND splits with SDSU

A late rally by South Dakota State in the second game of the doubleheader spoiled North Dakota’s hopes of a sweep on Wednesday at Apollo Field.

UND downed the Jackrabbits 6-4 in the first game, before falling 5-2 in eight innings in Game 2.

Megan Keegan hit a home run and Amanda Johnson was 3-for-3 to lead UND in Game 1.

“We created scoring opportunities and converted well,” UND coach Eric Oakley said. “Keegan had a great shot in some tough conditions and our pitching and defense got us out of some jams. It was an all-around solid effort.”

In the second game, Caralyn Chewning pitched the complete game for UND, facing 36 batters through eight innings and striking out five. She conceded four earned runs on 11 hits.

“Chewning pitched extremely well, so it’s disappointing that we didn’t get the win for her today,” Oakley said.

UND freshman Megan Hedstrom pitched a complete game as well, going the distance in the first game of the doubleheader. She struck out three, while giving up four runs on nine hits for the second win of her career.

UND hosts Idaho State this weekend in the final series of the season.
