UND names starting quarterback
The UND football team has named a starting quarterback.
Junior Nate Ketteringham, a transfer from Sacramento State, has won the three-man race, the program announced Tuesday morning.
Ketteringham, who’s 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, arrived in Grand Forks in the summer of 2017 and sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.
“He earned the job; nothing was given to the guys,” UND coach Bubba Schweigert said. “Each (of our quarterbacks) brought something different to the table. In the end, we had to make a decision, and you look at a number of factors, and you move forward. Each of those quarterbacks has a role on the team and now that role is more defined.”
Ketteringham, a San Diego native, started 15 games at Sacramento State in 2015 and 2016. He threw for 3,391 yards and 24 touchdowns, completing 54.7 percent of his passes. He also ran for 237 yards and four touchdowns.
Ketteringham, who takes over for four-year starter Keaton Studsrud, receives the nod over Andrew Zimmerman and Brock Boltmann.
Zimmerman, a junior college transfer and one-time Eastern Washington recruit, is the only one of the three to see action for UND last year. Zimmerman was 21-for-41 for 339 yards and three touchdowns.
Boltmann, an Edina, Minn., native, redshirted in 2017.
The coaching staff told the team Monday night. After an off day on Tuesday, the team returns to practice Wednesday.
“I went in to (UND offensive coordinator Paul Rudolph’s) office, and he said to get people to rally around you and get command of the huddle,” Ketteringham said. “He pretty just said let’s get going.”
Ketteringham faced UND once during his time under center with the Hornets. On Oct. 8, 2016, UND beat Sac State 40-7 in California.
Ketteringham was 15-for-34 for 177 yards and an interception. He was sacked three times.
The interception was by current UND teammate Evan Holm and one of the sacks was by current teammate Donnell Rodgers.
Ketteringham was overshadowed in the game by Brady Oliveira (111), Austin Gordon (102) and Keaton Studsrud (100) each rushing for 100-yard games.
UND opens the 2018 season Aug. 30 against Mississippi Valley State at the Alerus Center.
