The Thompson American Legion baseball team stat sheet reads like a slowpitch softball squad's numbers.

The Tommies have six regulars hitting above .425.

As a team, Thompson's hitting .402.

The Tommies take the hot bats to Langdon, where the North Dakota state Class B American Legion tournament begins Wednesday.

Thompson (29-4) plays Renville County, of northwest North Dakota, in the first round at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Thompson players are quick to downplay the gaudy numbers. That's even the case for Cadyn Schwabe, who's hitting an impressive .561.

"We just have to give all the credit to coach," Schwabe said. "He puts in all the time, and we trust him and hope to see good results."

"It's very rare but for us it's not about who's getting the most hits," Thompson catcher Trey Larimer said. "Our team is blessed to have so many guys hitting over that mark and have the offense we have, but it's about helping the team out and getting on base."

Larimer, who along with teammate Tyler Hegg is signed to play college baseball at Minnesota Crookston, is hitting .446 this season.

"Nobody really talks about that," Thompson's Hayden Overby said of the impressive stats. "Our coach really preaches that it's not about the individual statistics. It's about the team. It doesn't matter if one guy's hitting well; it takes the whole team."

Overby, who plays first base and outfield, is hitting .426 with two home runs and 39 RBI.

He said Thompson coach Brady Schwab, whose team won the state tournament in 2017, provides helpful tips with stances and approaches.

"Schwab is great with seeing problems in stances," Overby said. "He's good at finding the ways people are comfortable in the batter's box. He's great with that."

Said Schwabe: "He puts us through tees and front toss. A lot of it is mindset, too. He's prepared us well with the mental approach, as well."
