Red River's Johnson, doubles team still alive: Grand Forks Red River's Shaelyn Johnson is one of four players still vying for the singles crown at the East Region tournament in Fargo.

Johnson defeated Fargo Shanley's Jude Rabadi 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals to advance to today's semifinals.

In doubles, Red River's Brooke Kennelly and Lilli Pokrzywinski have also advanced beyond the quarterfinals.

The Red River duo beat Fargo North's Lauren Harr and Ilissa Hardie 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

West Fargo 7, GF Red River 1: West Fargo pitcher Tristen Roehrich went seven innings, allowed one hit and struck out 13 to lead the Packers to a win over Grand Forks Red River in the championship semifinals of the East Region tournament on Friday in Valley City.

Coby Tweten picked up Red River's lone hit.

Adison Krank led the West Fargo offense with three hits.

Red River plays Fargo Shanley in a state qualifier at noon today.

GF Central 5, West Fargo Sheyenne 3: Zachary Murphy gave up one earned run, five hits and struck out six in six innings as Grand Forks Central beat West Fargo Sheyenne in loser-out play at the East Region tournament on Friday in Valley City.

Joe Grabanski had a two-run double for the Knights, who will play a state qualifier at 2 p.m. today.

Prep softball

GF Red River 8, GF Central 2: Grand Forks Red River rode a five-run first inning to a win over Grand Forks Central on Friday in loser-out play of the East Region tournament in West Fargo.

Hallie Roed led the Roughriders with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate with a double and two RBI.

Cassidy Kuntz was 2-for-4 to lead Central batters.

Red River plays West Fargo in a state qualifier at 11 a.m. today.

Girls soccer

GF Central 1, Fargo South 0: Peyton Stanich's second-half goal gave Grand Forks Central a win over Fargo South on Friday in loser-out play of the East Region tournament in Fargo.

Brianna Myrold made six saves for the Knights, while Bruins goalie Lexi Johnson also had six stops.

"The girls played a complete game today," Central coach George DuBois said. "Our season was on the line and they came through with an effort that ensured we get to play another day."

West Fargo 2, GF Red River 1: West Fargo's Jaci Osier had a goal and an assist to lead the Packers to a win over Grand Forks Red River on Friday in loser-out action at the East Region tournament in Fargo.

After falling behind 2-0, Red River's Kylie Autrey scored at 79 minutes, 45 seconds, with an assist from Sydnee Spivey.

College hockey

DU hires David Carle: David Carle will be the youngest head coach in college hockey next season as the University of Denver announced it has hired the 28-year-old to replace Jim Montgomery.

Montgomery left Denver for the Dallas Stars earlier this month.

Carle has been an assistant at Denver for the last five seasons under Montgomery. He got his start in coaching as a student assistant under George Gwozdecky in 2008.

Carle was scheduled to play for Denver, but was forced to retire because of a heart condition that was discovered at the NHL Combine.
