Devils Lake lands 3 on AA all-state team
Devils Lake landed three players and Grafton one on the North Dakota Class AA all-state high school football team, as selected by the state's coaches.
First-team selections are the Firebirds' Joey Hornstein at running back and George DeMarce on the defensive line, as well as Grafton linebacker Marcus Niemann. On the second team is Devils Lake's Luke Knowski. Positions aren't designated for second-team selections.
Here's a look at the area all-state selections.
Joey Hornstein: The junior slotback was a workhorse in the backfield, carrying 207 times for 1,172 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also had 13 receptions for 289 yards and seven TDs.
George DeMarce: The senior was a dominant force on the line. DeMarce was in on 61 tackles (42 solos). He had nine sacks and 22 tackles for loss.
Marcus Niemann: The senior was in on 116 tackles (52 solos). He had four sacks, 19 tackles for loss and forced two fumbles. Niemann, a repeat all-stater, rushed 173 times for 1,084 yards with nine touchdowns to lead the Spoilers offense. He also had 10 catches for 116 yards.
Luke Knowski: The junior led the Firebirds' defense with 92 tackles (60 solos). He had two sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss. On offense, he rushed 71 times for 505 yards and five TDs.
