Northland wins MCAC title: Northland Community and Technical College trailed 28-27 at the half but erupted for 41 second-half points in beating Mesabi Range 68-35 on Sunday to win the MCAC state championship and NJCAA Region XIII title in the process.

It was the first football title for Northland since the program was started in 1976.

Northland quarterback Shannon Patrick led the Pioneers by throwing nine touchdown passes

Both Northland and Mesabi now await possible bowl invitations. Northland improved to 9-2 while Mesabi dropped to 7-4.


Torrey signs at Montana: Grand Forks Central High School senior Rachel Torrey has signed a letter of intent to compete in cross country at NCAA Division I University of Montana.

Torrey is a three-time all-state runner, finishing 13th at the state meet as a sophomore, 10th as a junior and sixth this season. She was named Class A senior runner of the year.

This marks the third straight season a Central girls runner has signed to compete at the NCAA Division I level, following Grace Roehl (UND) and Karly Ackley (Iowa State).

EGF athletes sign: Two East Grand Forks Senior High senior athletes have signed letters of intent to play college athletics.

Kenzie Whalen has signed to play women's hockey at Wisconsin-Superior.

Alex Mutch has signed to play baseball at Minnesota-Crookston.
