Fifth-year UND football assistant coach Joel Schwenzfeier has received a new job title.

UND head coach Bubba Schweigert tagged Schwenzfeier on Monday as the program's recruiting coordinator, a position vacated during the spring when running backs coach Kevin Maurice left the program for Eastern Washington.

Schwenzfeier, of Hallock, Minn., is also the program's outside linebackers coach.

"Joel has been part of the program as a player now as a coach for several years," Schweigert said. "He has a very good understanding of the type of individuals that we want to invite to be a part of our program. He also has a strong understanding of what UND is all about and has built solid relationships both on campus and in the city of Grand Forks."

Schwenzfeier played safety at UND from 2007-10. He made 37 career starts and finished with 10 interceptions, including tying the program's single-game record with three interceptions in the 2009 season opener at Texas Tech.

"This is an exciting opportunity for me and I appreciate that coach Schweigert has the confidence in me to take on this role," Schwenzfeier said. "I'm excited to share with future recruits the great things we have going on here at my alma mater."

Schweigert filled the lone opening on his coaching staff earlier this month with the addition of running backs coach Malcolm Agnew.
