UND signs men's basketball coach Brian Jones to short-term extension to buy time for negotiations
UND men's basketball coach Brian Jones has signed a two-month contract extension, the school said Tuesday afternoon.
"We have agreed to a short-term extension with coach Jones in order to give us a little more time to work out the remaining details of a long-term contract," UND athletic director Brian Faison said. "I'm confident we will have a completed deal done quickly."
Jones' previous contract ended April 30. His new, short-term deal, signed the last week of April, covers through the end of June.
Financial details of the short-term contract were not immediately available.
According to UND, the school had hoped to have a contract extension in place in late April, but negotiating efforts were temporarily put on hold as Faison was out of the office for personal family reasons.
Jones led UND to a 22-10 record in the 2016-17 season, winning Big Sky Conference regular season and postseason tournament titles. The 20-win season was the first for UND at the Division I level and first since the 2004-05 team went 20-10 at the Division II level.
The Fighting Hawks lost 100-82 to No. 2 seed Arizona in the opening round of the NCAA tournament in Salt Lake City.
The Big Sky regular season title was the first for Jones in his 11 seasons. It was the first for the program since the 1994-95 team shared the North Central Conference crown.
The Big Sky tournament title was the third tournament crown for Jones, who led UND to two Great West Conference tournament championships. Jones' teams also played in the postseason six of the past seven years.
