UND pushes back athletic department timeline to announce cuts
UND President Mark Kennedy has extended the deadline for the athletic department's announcement of plans for a $1.3 million budget cut, the school announced in a blog post Thursday.
The athletic department was originally given a March 6 deadline to give Kennedy its recommendation for its budget target. The school now says athletic director Brian Faison has an April deadline.
UND said the extra time was given to “sort out potential new revenue opportunities and ramifications associated with UND’s recently announced transition from the Big Sky Conference to the Summit League in 2018 in most sports, as well as UND football’s intended move from the Big Sky to the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2020,” according to a UND blog post.
“The recent conference realignments will undoubtedly result in added revenues and lower expenses in the future as we unite with closer regional rivals,” Kennedy said. “Nevertheless, it is likely that we regrettably will need to consider again the number of sports we sponsor if we are to support competitive efforts of the remaining teams.”
If any program were to be cut this spring, Kennedy said the school won’t provide any opportunity to try to privately fundraise to save the program, which was the case with men’s golf last spring under the tenure of Interim President Ed Schafer.
