Montana falls to rival Montana State in Brawl of the Wild
Montana needed a win to keep alive its FCS playoffs hopes.
But the Griz fell to their biggest rival Saturday as Montana State took a 24-17 win in Missoula. The Griz, a perennial playoff participant, likely will be left out of the 24-team field when the pairing are announced today.
Freshman quarterback Chris Murray ran for two touchdowns and Montana State (2-6 Big Sky, 4-7 overall) rolled up 370 yards on the ground.
The rivalry game, called the Brawl of the Wild, was played for the 116th time.
Montana fell to 3-5 and 6-5.
Southern Utah 48, Northern Arizona 21: Patrick Tyler threw five touchdown passes, tying Southern Utah's single-game record, Mike Sharp became the school's career leader with 29 TD receptions and the Thunderbirds (5-3, 6-5) beat Northern Arizona (4-4, 5-6).
UC Davis 48, Sacramento State 30: Manusamoa Luuga ran for 249 yards with a touchdown and Ben Scott threw for five more scores to help lead UC Davis (2-6, 3-8) over Sacramento State (2-6, 2-9) in the season finale for both teams.
Weber State 34, Idaho State 28: Weber State rallied from a 21-17 halftime lead to keep its playoff hopes alive. The Wildcats are 6-2 and 7-4.
Jadrian Clark threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns.
Idaho State finished 1-7 and 2-9.
Eastern Washington 35, Portland State 28: Gage Gubrud threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns and Eastern Washington (8-0, 10-1) overcame a slow start to defeat Portland State (2-6, 3-8) on Friday night to clinch a tie for the Big Sky Conference title.
The Eagles share the Big Sky title with UND, which was idle Saturday.
