North Dakota deer gun licenses this year are at their lowest number since 1978, with slightly more than 43,000 tags available. Minnesota hunters also will face a conservative deer season this fall as the Department of Natural Resources tries to build up a deer herd that was reduced by a series of aggressive harvests and a couple of severe winters. North Dakota's deer gun season opens at noon today, and Minnesota's firearms deer season opens Saturday morning. (North Dakota Game and Fish Department photo)
