Friends mourn Wyoming men killed in Saturday plane crash near Thief River Falls

MARILYN HAGERTY: Calling all Shirleys

Dear Shirley,

We’re moving full speed ahead with plans for the second annual Shirley luncheon. It’s coming up on Thursday, Aug. 14. It’s going to be at Whitey’s in East Grand Forks, and I have some reservations already.

But we don’t need reservations, Shirley. All the Shirleys around the Grand Forks area are invited to come and sit at the Shirley tables. And there’s a special invitation for anyone named Marilyn.

This year we are going to have a table nearby for any friends of Marilyns or Shirleys who show up.

Surely, Shirley, we won’t need name tags.

Last year we found out there is a national Shirley Club. We always knew you have a grand old name. It started out in England, and it grew to great popularity when Shirley Temple was in her heyday.

Nowadays, people don’t even know who Shirley Temple was, although you can still get a sweet Shirley Temple non-alcoholic drink at the Olive Garden.

Last year at the Green Mill we had 62 Shirleys and Marilyns gathered round for lunch. With a few friends on the side tables, it should be great fun again this August.

The weather has been ideal around here lately. I wish you were able to come up from Arizona and enjoy it with me.

They held School House Days over at the Grand Forks County Historical Society this week. And pretty soon it will be school for real. You can feel the wheels beginning to turn for the beginning of the 2014-2015 year ahead. It seems most everyone is happy that school doesn’t start until after Labor Day this year.

Love from your sister Marilyn hunting down Shirleys in the Red River Valley of the North.

P.S. My faith in kids is renewed by a newspaper my granddaughter Carmen, 11, composed when she returned from YMCA Camp Fitch on Lake Erie.

She wrote: “You may be imagining kids hating their lives without electronics or starving for lack of video games.

“When a kid finds something they would much rather do such as swim, water ski, canoe or play cards — who needs electronics?”
