Helen G. Lerud, age 102 of Hoople, ND passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the First Care Health Center of Park River, ND.
Helen Gertrude Lerud was born May 24, 1915 in Grafton, ND the daughter of the late Andrew and Florence (Blades) Berdahl. She attended Hoople Public School and graduated from Hoople High School. After attending Valley City State Teacher's College, she received her Standard Certificate. She taught school in Hoople for 24 years and was much beloved by her students. She married Lawrence C. Lerud on June 6, 1937. After the death of her husband she continued to live in Hoople until 2007 when she moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Park River.
Helen was a lifelong member of the First Lutheran Church in Hoople and an active member of WELCA. Other activities included Monday Night Study Club, the North Dakota Retired Teachers Association and Twiggies.
Helen was an avid reader, especially mysteries and biographies. She also loved to travel and took many trips by car and bus throughout the United States with her husband Lawrence. Helen and Lawrence spent many winters in California so they could by near her daughter Ruth's family. They also visited relatives in Norway and searched for Helen's ancestral roots in England.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Lerud, Derby, CT; and Ruth Barnett, Villa Park, CA; her three grandchildren: Erin, Timothy and Mark. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, Ruth, three brothers, James, Charles and Richard, and an infant son Ronald who died shortly after birth.
Helen's daughters would like her to be remembered as a wonderful mother. She was a constant source of inspiration because of her dedication to home, family, her Christian faith and her country. Her love, strength, wisdom, courage, warmth and sense of humor will remain with us always.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church of Hoople, ND. Visitation will be Saturday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Hoople City Cemetery in the spring.
