Kennedy Bridge to close for full week

GRAND FORKS — Commutes across the Grand Cities could get a little longer.

"The lines going on Demers were backed up,” said Raechelle Krawza, who works downtown.

The Kennedy Bridge is set to close for the next week.

"It's nice knowing that traffic down here's going to be a lot crazier in the downtown area,” Krawza said.

Drivers said they're not looking forward to it.

"I would try and avoid this area,” Krawza said.

The shut down comes after what MnDOT is calling unforeseen work on the bridge.

WDAY News has learned MnDOT crews will be working on the deck of the bridge.

The concrete needs time to cure.

Crews will also be painting on the bridge during the closure.

"Come a little earlier or leave work a little earlier or leave a little bit later when I knew traffic wasn't going to be as bad," Krawa said.

This is the longest stretch of time the bridge has been closed since work began.

Instead of the usual three day increments — you'll have to use the southern bridges until next Tuesday.

But when the bridge reopens next week — the ramps on both sides will also reopen.

"It's so quick to just take gateway, take the ramp off and you're at River cinema. I do miss those ramps to go to the movies," Krawa said.

MnDOT's bridge supervisor tells us they expect work to be complete on the $16-million dollar project by the end of October.

Relief — drivers say is right around the corner.

"I'm going to be really excited when the bridge is fully operation and no construction,” Krawza said.
