Gilby Post Office indefinitely shuttered over mold worries
GILBY, N.D.—If you're mailing a letter in Gilby, it's mostly business as usual. But if you're looking to pick one up from the post office, you're going to have a harder time.
The U.S. Postal Service announced on Thursday that the Gilby post office, 209 Main Ave., is closed until further notice. Postal Service spokesman Pete Nowacki said in an emailed statement that "a water leak in the basement ... has raised a concern of the possibility of mold infiltration."
Reached later for comment, Nowacki said he did not immediately have details on the water leak or how it might be linked to possible mold. He also said that there's no timeline for a return to normal service.
"To ensure the safety and health of our customers and employees, we are in the process of having a mold assessment conducted at this facility," Nowacki said in the email. "We cannot determine our next step until this assessment is complete."
Nowacki said customers who would usually use the Gilby post office to receive mail or conduct business can do so at the Arvilla (N.D.) Post Office at 303 Hughes Ave. Window hours at that location, he said, run from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 to 9:15 a.m. on Saturdays.
"We apologize for any inconvenience this causes but our first priority must be the safety of customers and employees," Nowacki said in the email. "Mail will still be collected from the collection box outside the Gilby Post Office."
