Submarine North Dakota returns from first sea trial

The nuclear attack submarine North Dakota has returned from its first voyage on the open seas, according to its manufacturer General Dynamics Electric Boat.

The so-called “alpha sea trials” included the sub’s first time submerging, and high-speed runs on and below the surface.

When commissioned on Oct. 25, the U.S.S. North Dakota will be the second navy vessel named after the state and the 11th ship in the Virginia class, the nation’s latest class of attack subs.

Its sister ship, the future U.S.S. Minnesota completed alpha and bravo sea trials in May, the navy said.
