Northwood, N.D., gets grant for hockey arena

The Northwood (N.D.) Ice Storm Hockey Boosters Club has been awarded a $25,000 matching grant from the Garrison Diversion Conservancy District to help with construction of an indoor hockey arena.

Construction is expected to begin soon near the town’s only school, with plans for completion in time for the 2014-2015 hockey season, according to Chad Veer, club president. He didn’t immediately have the cost of the project on hand.

Northwood’s youth program begins with mini-mites at age 4 and continues through high school.

“We’re hoping this building will keep some of the older kids interested in playing,” Veer said.

Northwood did not have enough players last season to field a high school team, he said.

Some played in Mayville, while others went to Grand Forks. The Ice Storm program attracts youths not only from Northwood, but from several other area communities, including Thompson, Larimore and Aneta, N.D.

Club boosters are hoping to form a co-op with an existing high school hockey program for the 2014-2015 season, Veer said.
