A 53-year-old Devils Lake man was killed in a one-vehicle accident Sunday evening along Interstate 29 near Buxton, N.D.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the driver, Monte Allen Armentrout, was driving a 1998 Ford minivan south at about 6 p.m. Sunday when the accident occurred.

He had just passed another vehicle at mile marker 118 and had merged back into the right lane of travel when his vehicle started to weave back and forth, according to the report. The vehicle then slowly drifted across the left lane and entered the median.

The Highway Patrol report said that the driver apparently appeared to be attempting to bring his vehicle under control without braking. However, it continued to fishtail back and forth in the median.

As the vehicle approached a bridge pillar at Exit 118, the vehicle reportedly turned to the right. The minivan struck the center concrete pillar with its front driver’s door and front quarter panel, according to the report.

The victim was the lone occupant of the vehicle. The accident remains under investigation.

The Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Traill County Sheriff’s Department and Buxton Fire Department.
