Minnesota candidate for governor picks another senator as running mate

ST. PAUL -- Minnesota governor candidate Dave Thompson picked another senator as his lieutenant governor candidate.

The Republican Lakeville senator announced Thursday that Michelle Benson, R-Ham Lake, will be his running mate.

"In her short time in the Minnesota Senate, Michelle has risen to a leadership position through her strong work ethic and her desire to bring conservative reforms to Minnesota," Thompson said. "She shares my vision for our great state, and I know she will be a huge asset on the campaign trail, but most importantly, as Minnesota's next lieutenant governor."

Thompson pledged to make the lieutenant governor role more than ceremonial. He said that he and Benson would have a conservative partnership.

Benson would have the job in a Thompson administration of leading changes in the state health care system, including eventually replacing the MNsure health insurance sales website, the governor candidate said.
