August weather proved to be slightly wetter, mostly average

It was slightly wetter than usual in August, with fairly normal temperatures, even though the thermometer never hit 90 degrees during the month, according to a preliminary report from the National Weather Service in Grand Forks.

“Statistically it was a pretty normal August,” according to the report, which was drafted by meteorologists at the Grand Forks International Airport. “Precipitation was a little above the long-term average but within the expected climatic variability for August.”

A total of 3.2 inches of rain was recorded at the Grand Forks International Airport last month, with a record-setting day of rain Aug. 24. The 1.15 inches of rainfall that day overtook the 1981 record of .98 inches, according to data from the National Climatic Data Center. The record for rainfall in the month of August is 6.21 inches, set in 2002.

This August did not produce many scorchers, with the hottest day reaching 87 degrees, according to preliminary weather data. Last year, there were six days in August in which temperatures equaled or exceeded 90 degrees, according to the National Climatic Data Center.

But the average temperature this August did not vary widely from those in years past. The mean temperature was 68.1 degrees last month, not much lower than last year’s average of 68.2 degrees in August.
