Helping hands

  •  School supplies giveaway: Backpacks filled with elementary school supplies will be given away by Verizon Wireless to families in the Grand Forks area. The giveaway will last from through Sunday. There is a limit of one backpack per family while supplies last. Backpacks can be picked up at the BeMobile store at 2100 S. Columbia Road in Grand Forks.
  •  Charity book sale: Ferguson Books and More is holding a charity book sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to help a Minnesota family with the costs of adopting a Chinese child with special needs. Info:(701) 738-8025.
  •  Memorial ride: The second annual KMO Memorial Ride will start at noon Saturday at Casa Mexico, 112 14th St. N.E., East Grand Forks, in honor of fallen East Grand Forks police Officer Kenneth Olson. The cost is $20 per bike, $10 per passenger, $10 for the general public and free for kids 12 and younger. After the ride a meal will be served starting at 5 p.m., as well as a beer garden, door prizes, raffle and auction. Proceeds from the event will go to the K.M. Olson Scholarship for future law enforcement, fire fighters, and emergency service personnel, as well Project Lifesaver. Info: (218) 791-6898.
  •  Apple Tree: United Way of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and Area, and Scheels are holding a back to school fundraiser for backpacks, shoes and gym clothes throughout the month of August. An Apple Tree will be on display outside the Columbia Mall entrance of Scheels, and each apple will list an item for a student in need. Those who select an apple from the tree will be asked to purchase the item listed and drop it off at Scheels customer service by Sept. 1. Items will then be handed over to Grand Forks Public Schools and distributed to the children. Info: (701) 780-9424.
  •  Senior companions: Lutheran Social Services is looking for seniors who are 55 and older and interested in helping their older neighbors to volunteer with its Senior Companions program. Volunteers provide companionship, social recreation and assistance with daily living activities so seniors can continue live independently in their own homes. Those interested must be able to volunteer at least 15 hours per week and in exchange are eligible for a tax-free hourly stipend, travel reimbursement, paid holidays and ongoing training opportunities.
