Long Prairie woman challenging Rep. Collin Peterson

Amanda Lynn Hinson

LONG PRAIRIE, Minn.--Amanda Lynn Hinson, an author who has worked as a missionary and ran a video business, has announced that she is running as a Republican trying to unseat Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn.

Hinson, a former deputy chairwoman of the 7th District Republican Party, served on the George W. Bush Campaign in Otter Tail County and once ran for a seat on the Buffalo City Council.

She has 14 years of experience as a ministry volunteer and served as a licensed pastor with the Assemblies of God from 2008 to 2015, according to her campaign biography.

Hinson is the author of a memoir, "Wide Open Curtains: A Journal of a Pregnant American in Russia," and also has traveled in Mexico and Malaysia.

A 1998 graduate of Perham High School, Hinson graduated from North Central University with a degree in mass communications. She worked in promotions for a radio station in Anoka and as a television producer for Hughston Sports Medicine of Columbus, Ga., before running her own video business in Minnesota.

In a news release announcing her candidacy, Hinson said she is running "to preserve the freedoms we hold dear in America" and aims to "defend those who suffer from over-taxation, to be a voice for those of us feeling oppressed by our government, and stop the gross federal overreach in our communities."

Hinson said running for Congress is a chance to expand her public service.

"I realized last year that I can help more people, here and abroad, if I run for Congress," she said in the statement. She has filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission declaring her candidacy.

Peterson has represented the 7th District since 1991. He grew up on a farm near Baker and graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Peterson is the ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee. In his latest statement, he said he not decided whether he would run for re-election.
