Grand Forks School Board OKs funding for reading assistance

Grand Forks Public Schools

The Grand Forks School Board approved $422,328 in local funds Monday for remedial help for students at three elementary schools.

Federal law allows schools that have at-risk students — but don’t qualify for federal Title I funding, which supports at-risk children — to use money from the district’s general fund to assist these students.

The program has been in existence for decades with the district approving the funding annually, according to Assistant Superintendent Jody Thompson.

The money will be used to help pay for reading specialists at Century and Kelly elementary schools in Grand Forks and at Nathan Twining Elementary/Middle School on the Grand Forks Air Force Base, according to the district.
