Jonassen to be West Elementary School principal
Angie Jonassen, principal at Carl Ben Eielson Elementary School on the Grand Forks Air Force Base, will be reassigned to serve as principal at West Elementary School, according to a request approved by the Grand Forks School Board on Monday.
Ali Parkinson, currently principal at West, will be named the part-time acting principal of the new elementary school on the city’s south end and part-time K-5 literacy coordinator for the district, said Assistant Superintendent Jody Thompson. As acting principal, she will serve multiple roles during the construction year, including participating in construction meetings, interviewing new school staff and forming the PTO, he said.
In her role as the district K-5 literacy coordinator, she will lead the adoption of the elementary English language arts curriculum, which includes reviewing best practices in reading and writing. She will also serve as a part-time instructional coach in the Curriculum Instruction Assessment and Professional Development department, he said.
In April, the Grand Forks Air Force Base School Board voted in favor of consolidating two base schools — Carl Ben Eielson and Nathan F. Twining Elementary and Middle School. Mary Koopman, principal of Nathan F. Twining, will be principal of the yet-to-be-named school.
