Grand Forks Public Schools announce later start date

Grand Forks Public Schools will begin the 2014-15 school year after Labor Day, according to the district Monday.

Students in kindergarten through ninth grade will start Sept. 2. Students in grades 10 through 12 will start Sept. 3. The last day of school for all grades is June 4, 2015.

Interest in a later start date has been gaining popularity statewide. A petition circulating through districts has so far gained 3,877 signatures, according to a Facebook page on the topic, and the intent is to gain enough support for a 2014 ballot measure.

In December, the Bismarck School Board approved to start classes after the holiday following a survey of parents and students.

Grand Forks staff, parents, high school students and others recently completed a similar survey about their calendar preferences for the upcoming year. Sixty-six percent of respondents said they preferred to start school after Labor Day, Assistant Superintendent Jody Thompson at the last board meeting.

The district’s calendar committee continues to finalize the 2014-15 calendar, which will be finished by March 14.
