A burglary gone afoul? Bemidji intruder caught inside house using bathroom

BEMIDJI -- Bemidji police caught a man allegedly burglarizing a residence red-handed Saturday morning.

Mark Edward Reitmeier, 26, of Bemidji was arraigned on second-degree burglary charges in Beltrami County Court on Tuesday.A renter of the property on the 1300 block of First Street East notified police at 5:05 a.m. Saturday that the front door had a broken window above the door handle. When she entered the residence, she saw furniture flipped over, according to court documents. She then retreated from the house and called 911.

When officers arrived, they found Reitmeier in an upstairs bathroom. In a statement given to police, the building owner observed the damage to the property and found a receipt that belonged to Reitmeier near the front door. Court documents state that the building owner also observed a foul smell when he went upstairs. He identified the source of the smell as “human waste in the bathtub.”

Officers observed cuts to Reitmeier’s hands, but he refused to allow photographs to be taken of the cuts, according to the criminal complaint.

In a statement to police, Reitmeier said he had been at the Sanford Center watching a football game on Friday night until midnight. According to court documents, Reitmeier said he did not know how he got to the residence on First Street East and that he had no memory of his actions from the time he left the Sanford Center until he heard officers yelling inside the house.

Reitmeier faces up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. Reitmeier was released from custody after his arraignment. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Feb. 18.
