Man accused of killing nephew returns to Minn. to face charges

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – Michael Alan Burris, who is accused of killing his nephew over a drug debt, has been returned to Otter Tail County to face murder charges.

The 65-year-old was returned to Minnesota on a governor’s warrant and recently made his first court appearance in Otter Tail District Court.

The body of Scott Burris was found in the Otter Tail River near Fergus Falls in May 2012. He had a gunshot wound to the head.

Court documents say Michael Alan Burris killed Scott Burris and then enlisted his son, 24-year-old Michael Kyle Burris, to help him dispose of the body.

Father and son were arrested in Arizona in August.

Burris’ son was extradited back to Otter Tail County in October, but Arizona officials filed conspiracy charges against the elder Burris, complicating his return to Minnesota.

“It’s been a lot of work for law enforcement for a year and a half to two years, a lot of work that we have ahead of us,” Michelle Eldien, assistant Otter Tail County attorney, told WDAY-TV. “So, it’s nice to just get him here, get it done, and, obviously, the family needs closure, and that’s huge that they’ve waited this long.”

Michael Alan Burris is charged with felony second-degree murder. His bail is set at $1 million.

His son remains in Otter Tail County jail facing charges of second-degree murder and aiding an offender.

The elder Burris’ next court date is set for Feb. 18.
