An electronic shooting range, a mini bowling alley and more will be revealed when the new Scheels store opens in Grand Forks June 28.

When the store, located in Columbia Mall, opens, the Scheels on South Columbia Road near Altru Health will be closed, said Jason Heintz, store leader, at a press conference Thursday. That store was the company’s first-ever all-sports store, he said.

At 124,000 square feet, the new store is much larger and was designed to be able to compete with the large Scheels in Fargo, Heintz said.

A sports simulator game, a bike shop, a golf club simulator, a deli restaurant and fudge shop, a children’s playground and expanded inventory for almost all sections of the store were just some of the features revealed in a media tour of the store.

Its college section will include merchandise from North Dakota State University, University of Minnesota and schools across the country, as well as UND.

And employees are excited about the providing customers with an expanded women’s fashion section, said Darren Spaeth, assistant store leader.

“We’re carrying way more brands than we ever had before,” he said.

While the South Columbia Scheels has four fitting rooms, the new store will have 40, he said.

Managers hope the new store will receive more traffic by having both a mall entrance and an exterior entrance, they said.

The store also has goals of working with the community to host events and partnering with UND, said Stacey Dimmler, events coordinator.

Scheels will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

It will be one of 24 Scheels stores in the U.S., Heintz said. The Fargo-based company plans to add two more stores in 2015, in Rochester, Minn., and Overland Park, Kan.

Building Scheels, by the numbers

To build the new Scheels store, it took:

  •  135 miles of electrical wire
  •  3,489 individual light fixtures
  •  338 tons of new structural steel
  •  950 cubic yards of concrete
  •  40,000-plus square feet of tile
  •  1,200 gallons of paint
  •  And about 125,000 hours of work.
