Pursuit that exceeded 100 mph ends with abandoned car found in Devils Lake

DEVILS LAKE—State troopers are investigating a Tuesday night high-speed chase in Ramsey County.

A North Dakota Highway Patrol trooper initiated the pursuit at 8:12 p.m. Tuesday when the officer saw a westbound Chevy Cavalier speeding about 5 miles east of Devils Lake on U.S. Highway 2, according to a news release. The car reached speeds of more than 100 mph before driving into city limits, the release said.

"When the vehicle reached the city limits of Devils Lake the trooper discontinued the pursuit for public safety reasons," Patrol Lt. Troy Hischer said in the release.

The vehicle was located without a driver in Devils Lake shortly after the pursuit ended and the car was seized for the investigation. In a phone interview, Hischer declined to release where the vehicle was located, citing the pending investigation.

A suspect was at large as of mid-morning Wednesday, Devils Lake Police Chief Joseph Knowski said. No one was injured in the pursuit, Hischer said.
