Amazing Grains to close; Downtown co-op to begin phase out sale Tuesday
Amazing Grains Natural Food Cooperative, a downtown organic grocer and deli, will close its doors next week, the store announced in a letter to its members Saturday night.
The co-op cited long term financial hardship, which was aggravated by organic giant Natural Grocers opening on the south end of Grand Forks in August 2016.
Amazing Grains saw a 30 percent loss in sales since Natural Grocers opened, according to the letter.
The co-op has been in Grand Forks since 1972.
“The Board, General Manager, and our fine staff are passionate about our co-op and proud of our 45 years in Grand Forks,” co-op leaders wrote in a letter to members.”This announcement is tough to make, but we are confident that it is the right decision.”
Amazing Grains will close early on Sunday, at 3:30 p.m., for the final member meeting, which will be held at The 701 on South Third Street.
Monday the store will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and beginning Tuesday the co-op will have increasing sales to clear out remaining items. There will be a 20 percent discount on all items Tuesday, building by 10 percent each day until Saturday, when a day long, 60 percent off sale is expected to take place the final day of Amazing Grains.
“Although this is a sad moment for Amazing Grains, we hope that you will join us Sunday and over the next week to celebrate our amazing co-op and all that we have done in the Grand Forks community since our foundation in 1972,” the board of directors wrote to members. “In January 2000, we were one of the first businesses to move downtown after the 1997 flood and have been a downtown destination for thousands of shoppers for the past 17 years.”
