Charge: Woman begged for her life when she was shot, falls 2 stories in West Fargo
WEST FARGO—A woman who was shot while begging for her life during a disturbance in a West Fargo apartment early Sunday, March 19, was caught by bystanders when she fell from a two-story window after being wounded.
Those details and others are contained in court documents filed Monday, March 20, in Cass County District Court charging David White Jr., 26, of Illinois, with attempted murder and reckless endangerment.
Officers were called to an apartment complex about 12:30 a.m. Sunday on a report of a disturbance, court documents state.
As officers arrived, they found a woman hiding under a van and covered in blood.
"It was a very chaotic scene when officers arrived," West Fargo Interim Police Chief Jerry Boyer said Monday.
The woman was transported to the hospital and a male identified as White was detained.
White told officers he fired shots and directed officers to where the gun could be found in the apartment where the incident occurred, documents state.
A witness who was present during the incident told police White fired two shots at the female victim, once in a hallway as the woman was running away and once in a bedroom as the woman was begging for her life, documents state.
The witness said the shot fired in the bedroom appeared to have been aimed at the woman's face.
The witness also told police White grabbed at the woman as she attempted to climb out of a second-story window, at which point the woman fell two stories and was caught by bystanders before she hit the ground, documents state.
The documents state one bullet was found in a closet of the bedroom near where three small children were.
White told police he and the female victim, whom he described as his girlfriend, got into an argument.
He said he saw a gun tucked in her pants and that he went at her to get it, at which point the gun fell on the floor.
White said he fired at least two and possibly three shots at the victim, documents state.
The attempted murder charge accuses White of taking a substantial step toward committing murder by repeatedly using a gun to shoot at the female victim while she begged for her life.
The reckless endangerment charge accuses White of creating a substantial risk of serious bodily injury or death by firing a gun in an apartment when children were present.
White remained in the Cass County Jail Monday after making an afternoon appearance in Cass County District Court.
The woman remains hospitalized in Fargo. Her condition is unknown. Boyer said she was unable to communicate as of Monday afternoon.
The woman's name has not been released.
