SOUND CHECK: Songs for running

Stepping outside, the early dawn set the perfect backdrop for a morning run before work.

Calm, sunny, 53 degrees.

Steam fog rises off the river and a pond.

The crisp, cool air offers an intense contrast with the afternoon heat of summer, and a hint of the harsh winter on the plains.

The freedom and ease of a morning run buoy fatigued legs; the songs on my iPhone encourage me to run further and faster.

If memories like these are the soundtrack to our lives, then music serves as the backup band.

Here are the songs playing recently on my iPhone:

  •  “Shameless” by Lissie
  •  “Into the Wild” LP
  •  “Anna Sun” by Walk the Moon
  •  “Trojans” by Atlas Genius
