The UND Writers Conference has hosted some big-name authors in its 44 years, but perhaps none bigger than playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner, who on Friday will share perspectives on his work, including some of America’s best-known plays and films.
Tony Kushner, who will be in Grand Forks this week for the UND Writers Conference, is one of America’s top playwrights and screenwriters. He spoke with the Herald about the process of writing, what it was like working with filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Mike Nichols and adapting a book into a screenplay. This interview has been edited for length.
While the crocuses bloom near her home in Portland, Ore., heavy snow falls in northern Minnesota, the place Cheryl Strayed considers her homeland.
It’s the place where her longest journey began. Where her mother died, her marriage crumbled, and the idea to hike the Pacific Crest Trail took root, a chapter of her life compellingly told in her best-selling memoir, “Wild.”
Want to see the movie that launched the career of this year’s Best Actress Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence? You can see “Winter’s Bone,” starring Lawrence and John Hawkes, at 6 p.m. Thursday at the UND Memorial Union Lecture Bowl.
“Angels in America,” the acclaimed HBO production written by Tony Kushner about America in the early days of the AIDS crisis, will be shown at the Empire Arts Center as part of events leading up to Kushner’s visit in March to the UND Writers Conference in Grand Forks.
Marine Corps veteran turned conscientious objector Jim Castellanos knows about conflict in writing. After five months in Iraq, he asked to turn in his gun and to be re-assigned to the medical corps or other non-combat position. The reaction of his fellow Marines was such that he was re-assigned to another barracks.
When it comes to drawing nationally and internationally known artists, no other event in the region comes close. That’s one reason why it’s such a pleasure to welcome this year’s participants to the 42nd annual conference, which begins today at UND.
Organizers of the UND Writers Conference have announced the names of four authors and artists who will headline the next conference March 29 through April 2. It’s theme will be “(Inter)National Affairs.”
The first day of the 41st annual UND Writers Conference began with a question that has more and more gravitas in the age of digital media, the so-called new media that lives online, can be interactive and sometimes links one story to another:
Are books obsolete? Does new media replace books, or is new media more an alternative to words on paper?
The venerable and frequently irreverent UND Writers Conference will begin today, its 41st annual year, headlined by an author who’s been described as both a genius and a tortured artist, and who has won a Pulitzer Prize with a comic book depiction of the Holocaust.
