The water portion of the Choice Wellness Center shrunk Tuesday.
A slight downsizing of the pool area was included in the Grand Forks Park Board’s approval of a design adjustment for the new wellness center that will be built on the far south end.
Jan. 1 usually marks the start of a new, ambitious workout regimen for many people who resolve to get in better shape by the end of the year or lose the few extra pounds they picked up while gorging on holiday feasts.
Grand Forks Park District officials anticipated Thursday that they would wrap up the sale of bonds that would allow a $24 million project. However, by the time they met in late afternoon, the interest rate had climbed to 4.1 percent, meaning an extra $1.7 million cost to the project.
Grand Forks park officials have lobbied for a new library to be located near their new wellness center. But if another location is chosen, they say, plenty of candidates remain to be Choice Wellness Center neighbors.
For those who frequent the library now and for the young people whose support will be needed to assure the success of the new library, it is critically important that the Wellness Center site is 40 blocks south of the Leevers site.
It is about bringing together all aspects of health and wellness. It is building on strengths in exercise, arts and social programming for all ages by adding strengths in health care and health/wellness research.
The Choice Wellness Center will be built, given its final nudge by a $6.5 million contribution by Altru that was announced Wednesday. The green light won’t be official until the Grand Forks Park Board meets Oct. 5, but board chairman Jim Bollman said, “It’s a given. It will happen.”
This project is essential to continuing on the path of ensuring a progressive community. In order to retain our young adults, families and businesses and to recruit new residents and companies, we need to invest in sustainable community development.
The administration restructuring is being done because Steve Mullally, superintendent of parks, is retiring at the end of the year. Under the long-time structure, Mullally ran the parks and Bill Palmiscno ran recreation, both under head administrator John Staley.
