The first place girls state track and field trophy will reside at Warroad High School, not with Deidre Hahn. “But there’s a spot in the trophy for a photo,” coach Alan Rybolt said. “And the picture will be one little girl.”
Susan Marvin, the president of Warroad, Minn., based Marvin Windows and Doors, was presented with Bemidji State University’s 2011 Distinguished Minnesotan Award during a university commencement ceremony Friday.
Warroad is losing more than 60 years of experience on its boys hockey coaching staff.
Head coach Albert Hasbargen and assistant coach Dennis Fermoyle both resigned this week. The 52-year-old Hasbargen has more than 30 years of coaching experience, most of those at the bantam level.
Tim Bergland summed it up best: “Here we go again.”
For the third straight year, and the seventh time in the last nine seasons, Bergland’s Thief River Falls boys hockey team plays Warroad in the Section 8A championship. The teams meet at 7 tonight in Thief River Falls, with the winner advancing to the Minnesota state tournament.
Warroad senior forward Karley Sylvester questioned her place on stage Sunday at St. Paul's RiverCentre among the five finalists for Ms. Hockey. But the college and high school coaches consulted in the selection process left no doubt.
Karley Sylvester, who helped lead Warroad to a second consecutive Class A state hockey title, has been named winner of the Ms. Hockey award, which goes to the top girls high school player in Minnesota.
Too much of a good thing is no problem for David Marvin – not when it comes to goal scorers. On Friday, for the second consecutive game, Marvin’s Warroad team romped to a win in the Minnesota Class A girls state high school hockey tournament.
