Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton didn't catch a walleye for the second straight year during the season opener. Dayton, who has never hidden his lack of angling prowess, nonetheless noted the warm, sunny weather and said he had "a great morning."
Pick a lake or river in Minnesota, and this year probably set a record for early ice-out. That had fishing prognosticators thinking walleye opener 2012 would be more like early June, which often serves up some of the easiest, if not the best fishing of the year.
In an effort to understand the allure of the walleye, we asked a handful of professional anglers, fishing guides and fisheries managers to weigh in with their thoughts on what makes this species so popular. Here’s what they had to say:
Plan does not apply to Lower, Upper Red Lakes;

For the first time in nearly 20 years, nontribal members will be allowed to keep walleyes on smaller lakes within the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
