The gruesome case of a man who was stabbed and beheaded in a suburban Phoenix apartment has police investigating whether the killing is potentially the most extreme example of Mexican drug cartel violence spilling over the border.
Violent crime is falling noticeably in Minneapolis despite the recent spike in economic insecurity. During the first 110 days of the year, the city had three homicides. That compares favorably to the same period two years ago, when there were 18 homicides by this time.
Crime overall hold steady
On the whole, the number of crimes reported to Grand Forks police held steady in 2008 compared to the year before, but violent crime bucked that trend, jumping 18 percent, according to statistics released Wednesday.
The stats show that aggravated assaults, those in which a weapon is used or a victim is seriously injured, have been increasing since 2005 and were punctuated by a 37-percent spike in 2008.
