The treasure hunt is on: Seeking money for Vikings stadium construction costs after the original plan produced less money than expected. The Minnesota House Taxes Committee discussed a bill, but took no votes Wednesday, that would slap a 10 percent tax on professional sports memorabilia sold in the state.
Last year, after 10 years of acrimony and debate over the public funding of a new Vikings stadium, the Legislature passed a financing package, one that calls for the state to pay $348 million of the $960 million in estimated total construction costs.
Sales taxes from both electronic pulltabs and linked bingo are earmarked to fund the state's $350 million share of the new Minnesota Vikings stadium, the biggest public works project in state history. But in the latest data available, pulltab gambling machines were in only about 200 Minnesota bars -- out of 2,500 the state expected them to be in.
