The wooden box was stained from age and covered with tattered canvas that gave no hint of the forgotten secrets it held. But when Kerry Conlin opened the lid it quickly became apparent that the box had been carefully placed in a corner of a bedroom closet for safekeeping by someone long ago. The old box was a time capsule stuffed with letters, photographs and family albums dating back to the 1930s and 1940s.
Marketers would have us believe Valentine’s Day is the one day a year you should show your loved one how special they are with roses, chocolates and a big romantic dinner. You know — the same exact thing everyone else is doing.
What becomes of a teddy bear that was once a Valentine’s Day present? A wedding dress from a marriage gone awry? All are on display at the Museum of Broken Relationships in the Croatian capital, each with written testimonies telling tales of passion, romance and heartbreak.
Grand Forks area nonprofit organizations hope to make Valentine’s Day a holiday for giving.
