UND pitcher Andrew Thome’s streak of consecutive scoreless innings ended at 24 on Friday afternoon, but the unexpected power of second baseman Michael Anastasi kept the freshman hurler on a winning roll. Anastasi’s first career home run high into the wind in the seventh inning lifted the Sioux to a 3-2 win over Houston Baptist in the opener of a four-game Great West Conference series at Kraft Field.

UND pitcher Andrew Thome walked out of the clubhouse Wednesday afternoon onto the artificial turf at Kraft Field to warm up for a bullpen session.
Despite a frame of 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, Thome’s appearance doesn’t exactly strike fear into his opponents. The innocent exterior is misleading. The freshman from St. Cloud, Minn., is becoming one of the toughest and most feared young pitchers in Division I baseball.

The celebration was tempered Tuesday when the UND baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally to a win over South Dakota State. Sioux senior Kyle Bolander — who was 3-for-5 with a home run and four runs batted in against the Jacks — fell to the artificial turf rounding first base on a sharp ninth-inning drive to the gap that should have been extra bases.

Freshman Andrew Thome threw his second straight shutout and UND hit three home runs in its win Friday at Kraft Field. Thome, 3-5, was perfect through five innings and yielded only three hits while striking out a career-high 11. He didn’t walk anybody.

The UND baseball team is partnering with the Cope Well Foundation to raise awareness of the challenges faced by cancer survivors. Sioux baseball players will wear lavender wristbands during their Great West Conference doubleheader against New York Institute of Technology. Also, UND players will wear lavender T-shirts during pregame batting practice.

Northern Colorado assistant coach Patrick Perry said the coaching staff delivered a message to its players before Sunday’s game against UND.
“We had some pearls of wisdom,” Perry said. “All year, it’s been an emotional roller coaster. Win, lose, win, lose. It’s a lack of concentration and focus. We had the call to arms speech and it seemed to make a difference.”

UND BASEBALL: Thome blanks Bears, earns first UND's first shutout in Division I era
UND freshman pitcher Andrew Thome is impatient. “I like to get the ball back and throw as fast as I can,” Thome said. “I like to keep in rhythm. I’m not a fan of games that take forever.” Friday’s game against Northern Colorado was definitely to his liking. Thome tossed a complete-game, nine-inning shutout by registering a career-high seven strikeouts and scattering four hits. The right-hander’s dominance led the Sioux to a 9-0 win over the Bears in a Great West Conference game that lasted a speedy 1 hour, 48 minutes at Kraft Field.
