STAFF BLOG UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA HOCKEY Weekly Wednesday update
Apologies for the late update, but today was a way-too-busy day with way-too-many stories to write before deadline.
UND will bench freshman defenseman Paul LaDue for Friday night's game because of a ... Posted on 12/5/13 at 12:40 AM
IT'S SIMPLY GRAND! What do we do now?
It has been a busy summer in the Grand Cities; school has started and the UND students have all moved back, and we are on the heels of a fabulous Grand Forks weekend with the first-ever Rollin' on the... Posted on 8/31/11 at 12:07 PM
Winning faceoffs is not a concern Dave Hakstol has had in a while. Thanks to players such as Corban Knight, Brad Malone, Chris VandeVelde, T.J. Oshie, Jonathan Toews, Travis Zajac and Zach Parise, UND has ranked near the top nationally in that category each year in the last decade. But this season, that dominant center is not there yet.
It will be a busy holiday season for the UND athletic department. UND now has two high-profile coaching positions to fill with the resignation of volleyball coach Ashley Hardee on Wednesday afternoon. UND already is searching for a head football coach to replace Chris Mussman, who was let go last month.
UND’s mission this week is to break a three-game losing streak. If that happens, UND will have to snap the streak against one of the country’s top programs and in one of the more historic venues in all of college basketball.
UND volleyball coach Ashley Hardee submitted his resignation on Wednesday, according to a release from the school. The resignation comes as Hardee is being investigated for a reported hit-and-run accident early Sunday morning while the team was in Portland, Ore., at the Big Sky tournament.
The list of applicants to become UND’s next head football coach grew again Tuesday, a week before the application deadline. UND has received 41 applications to take over the position held by Chris Mussman for the past six seasons.
St. Louis Blues forward David Backes remembers fondly the games he played against T.J. Oshie while the two were Western Collegiate Hockey Association rivals. Oshie and Backes are not only teammates now but also linemates for one of the NHL’s top teams.
Ashley Hardee, who coached UND’s volleyball team to a share of its first Big Sky championship this season, is on paid administrative leave after an incident at the Big Sky tournament this past weekend in Portland, Ore. UND athletic director Brian Faison said Monday the coach is the subject of an internal review.
It’s been 10 years since the UND football team has played rival North Dakota State for the Nickel Trophy, and the Division II women’s basketball dynasties at each school were left behind when both schools transitioned to Division I athletics.
Pacific coach Ron Verlin prefers to play man-to-man defense.
The style is a proven winner for the Tigers as they advanced to the NCAA tournament last season and are 6-1 this year with the only setback coming against No. 14 Oregon — a game Pacific led by seven at halftime.
UND scored two goals in the final 1 minute, 5 seconds of the second period and withstood a barrage of shots in the third to beat St. Lawrence 3-2 in front of 10,532 on Saturday night and earn a series split.
Playing without future Olympians Michelle Karvinen, Susanna Tapani and Tanja Eisenschmid as a dry run for when they are gone for a month at the 2014 Sochi Games, UND beat the Russian National Team 2-0 in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon.
