On one hand, Ben Jacobson admires the progress his alma mater — UND — has made since it moved up to Division I men’s basketball. On the other hand, he now realizes it won’t be as easy for his Northern Iowa Panthers to defeat UND.
UND men’s basketball play-by-play radio announcer Paul Ralston is a university employee and more importantly an extension of the public relations staff. I was baffled when the story of Ralston being suspended two games for his comments following last Saturday’s loss to Northern Arizona went viral, landing on the front pages of the Sports Illustrated and ESPN web sites.
The Big Sky Conference season is in the stretch run. The race, however, isn’t for first or second. It’s for third — and the position is up for grabs as only one game separates teams currently sitting in the third through the eighth spots in the 11-team league.
The UND men’s basketball team seemingly didn’t have any answers for Montana hybrid post Mathias Ward, a 6-foot-7, 227-pound inside-out threat. Well, that’s not entirely true, though. North Dakota coach Brian Jones’ best three options to cover Ward were wearing street clothes Thursday night.

UND left Cedar City, Utah, earlier this week still looking for its first win of the season against a Division I men’s basketball team. Southern Utah beat UND 79-67 in a game that left North Dakota frustrated — the same feeling it has had in a handful of close losses this season.

In the end, though, North Dakota dropped a great opportunity at a road victory as a buzzer-beating 3-pointer lifted the Jacks to a shocking 71-70 win over UND.
North Dakota hasn’t won a non-conference road game since March of 2009 against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The Green and White face a big obstacle in breaking that streak when they open the season at 8:15 p.m. tonight against Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan.
