Dry conditions and low river levels have prompted the North Dakota Game and Fish Department and park officials to cancel the fall stocking of rainbow trout in the Turtle River at Turtle River State Park.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for northeastern Grand Forks County from Friday evening to 10 a.m. today.
The Turtle River near Manvel, N.D., had risen about 3 feet Friday because of an ice jam downstream, the weather service said, and it may rise another 2 feet overnight.
Park managers in North Dakota said reservations for the Memorial Day weekend are running high but cool temperatures could keep people at home.
“One big difference over last year is the price of fuel. That was a major item for us last year,” said Henry Duray, manager of Graham’s Island State Park near Devils Lake. The number of out-of-state visitors to Graham’s Island, mainly anglers, dropped by 50 percent in 2008, Duray said. Many have come back.
