The Alerus Center will pay for the replacement of its artificial turf in one year instead of three, saving $99,850 in finance costs. The Events Center Commission has reached an agreement with UND for the university to provide $2 million of the cost of the facility’s new playing surface and related mechanical systems. The commission had planned to finance the $3.83 million project over three years but instead budgeted it all for 2012 in its meeting Wednesday.
As an indoor football venue, the Alerus Center cannot host games on real grass, but for $4 million, it can have something almost as good.
After 11 years of wear and tear, the Alerus Center’s management is replacing its playing surface with new turf, estimated to cost between $3.5 million to $4 million.
Southern Utah painted 40 yards of its grass football practice field red the week before it played at Eastern Washington earlier this season. The reason: EWU installed red Sprinturf at its home stadium, a surface that has brought the school national notoriety.
