Katarina Reller didn’t become a full-time thrower in prep track until this spring. Now she’s taking her throwing ability to the college level. Reller, who graduated from Grand Forks Central High School last month, has made a verbal commitment to compete in track at UND.
This wasn’t how Brooke Shimek pictured finishing her high school career in the 800 race she’s dominated for three seasons. The Thompson senior was passed near the finish line Saturday. Then Shimek tripped and fell forward to the ground, got up and finished the race to place seventh on the final day of the North Dakota Class B girls high school track meet.
John Hoplin left high school athletics competing to the end.
The Grand Forks Red River senior won his second straight title in the javelin Saturday on the final day of the North Dakota Class A state meet.
It was the running part of track and field that initially soured Katarina Reller on the sport. Now it’s the throwing part that has Reller in state title contention. Reller is a top-three seed in the discus, shot put and javelin going into the ND Class A girls high school track meet.
