Documents made public late Wednesday reveal that Washington, D.C.-based testing company American Institutes for Research has decided against seeking renewal of its $61 million contract with the state Department of Education. The state is soliciting bidders to replace the contractor after its three-year deal expires next year.
North Dakota, one of a handful of states requiring high-stakes testing for home schoolers, has long been known for having tougher requirements compared to the rest of the nation. This bill is one step toward easing its reputation and giving home-school parents more freedom, said Theresa Deckert, spokeswoman for the North Dakota Home School Association.
North Korea successfully detonated a miniaturized nuclear device at a northeastern test site Tuesday, state media said, defying U.N. Security Council orders to shut down atomic activity or face more sanctions and international isolation.
New U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his South Korean counterpart have agreed to make sure North Korea is punished if it carries out its threat to conduct a nuclear test. Amid signs that such a test is coming, South Korea's president also speculated that Pyongyang may detonate multiple atomic devices simultaneously.
Why not aim at the state whose students rank No. 1?
That would be Massachusetts, a state whose educational achievements deserve a lot more attention — as well as imitation by states that want their own students’ achievement to improve.
