The Internal Revenue Service will begin accepting and processing 2013 tax returns a little later than usual. But farmers and their tax preparers shouldn’t delay making a start, especially when they might need to deal with issues such as net investment income tax and the Affordable Care Act.
The income tax, regarded as the most power conferred on American government since the government’s foundation, started 100 years ago. The story in the Herald in 1913 said the tax was on the path to bring billions into the public treasury.
By mid-December, city, county and other local officials decide how much property tax they will collect. Those decisions come on the heels of the Democratic Legislature and governor sending them large bundles of new money in the name of property tax relief.
Giving county tax directors and top city assessors three years to get fully trained and certified while they continue to put values on people’s property for tax purposes “doesn’t seem right,” a member of a legislative committee said Wednesday.
Minnesota’s economy has been getting high marks lately. Unemployment is dropping, and tax collections were up in fiscal year 2012-13. We moved to No. 8 on Forbes’ annual list of Best States for Business, up markedly from last year.
